Moats are made with authentic Devon beach vibes. On a sunny day you'll often find us hanging over the harbour wall in Lynmouth or on one of our favourite beaches, sanding away at the sunglasses
Our oceans are drowning in plastic waste, so choosing wood has become more than just a style choice, it's a moral consideration too. All Moats are made from re-purposed or responsibly sourced hardwood.
As Unique As You
Variety is the spice of life and so we have created 6 timeless styles to choose from with over 250 total variants. Every single pair of Moats is unique. Just like you.
Made to Order
If you know what you like but can't quite find it, why not build your own?
Our most popular combinations can be found under the 'Customer Favourites' tab, but if you feel you have a flair for design, and fancy something more bespoke, we offer an Eco and a Luxe
'Build Your Own Moats' service.
Whichever option you choose, please exercise a little patience - these gorgeous works of art can't be made overnight.
Each pair of Moats usually takes a couple of weeks to cut, polish, assemble, and despatch. If there is any change to this timeframe we will be sure to let you know.
Where it all began...
The Moat House story began in 2013, at an 800 year old moated manor house in Derbyshire where the Clarke family (Sam, Nick, Issy & Matilda) were living.
Carpentry and creativity run strong in the Clarke family blood, so when an old Oak tree in the grounds of The Moat House lost a limb, instead of burning it on the fire, Sam asked Nick if he could make something from it.
Whilst pondering over what he could make with such a small slice of Oak, Nick noticed a pair of his Daughter's 3D cinema glasses on the kitchen table and there the idea was born. His afternoon was spent crafting a lovely, if not a little rustic, pair of spectacles. He hinged them with an old copper nail then sat back and admired his creation. He wondered if wooden sunglasses could ever become 'a thing'.
Here we are, a few long years on, having won many awards for sustainability, quality and style, touring the festivals and shows of Great Britain, peddling our environmentally friendly wares! There are worse ways to earn a living :)
It turns out wooden sunglasses could become 'a thing'! People LOVE them and new brands have been popping up all around us ever since. Most brands, of course, are robotically made overseas, and most are made from bamboo not hardwood, but all with a common cause which is to reduce unnecessary plastic.
